Words to Live by

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Boy, what a false statement that turned out to be.
Words have the power to deliver wounding or healing. Doubt or reassurance. Fear or hope.
Words foster pictures in our minds, which tell our brain what is happening, what to believe, how to respond, and what it all means.

Our deeply held beliefs about ourselves (as well as about others and the world around us) are nothing more than arrangements of words. How the words are arranged greatly impacts the meaning we give them and the power we allow them to have over us.

Sometimes, I’ve arranged words about myself that come together like this…
I am TIRED, worn out, done.
I can’t DO that, HAVE that, BE that.
I am CONFUSING and INARTICULATE.
I am TOO SLOW, TOO FAST, TOO LOUD, TOO QUIET.
I am NOT ENOUGH.
I am WEAK.

In my clear-headed moments, I know that these thoughts about myself are not true.
And in my boldest moments, I actually dare to call them lies and to recognize them for what they are:
exactly the words that the Great Liar wants for me to believe.

When I believe these lies, I feel unsure of myself.
When I believe these lies, I keep myself small and safe. No risk. No bravery. No adventure.

BORING.

I need new words to live by. Words that empower me, embolden me, and enliven me.
Words of Truth. HIS TRUTH.

I am LOVED.
I am WANTED.
I am CHERISHED.
I am PRECIOUS.
I am DESIGNED.
I am perfectly IMPERFECT. And God loves me exactly where I am, though too much to leave me there!

And so are our children, yes? As a mom, I am very aware of my daughter taking her queues from me; about her worthiness, loveliness, and acceptance. This gives me an additional – and very compelling – reason to be mindful about which words I choose to live by. Which words do I allow to define my day, my marriage, my achievements, my existence?

What word or phrase you are READY to eliminate from your self-talk?
Is there a word or phrase you are READY to speak to yourself with intention?

A closing prayer:
Father God, thank You for Your many gifts and blessings in our lives. Most especially the gift of Jesus. We ask that You would reveal to us the words You wish for each one of us to live by today. If there are arrangements of words that we’ve been believing, which are NOT serving You or ourselves, we ask that You would remove those arrangements from us now. And that You would fill the gap with Your Truths. Place Your Words directly into our hearts and minds now. We thank You. We praise You. And we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen!

Excellent post. I have learned, the hard way, how important words are…spoken or just thought. Thank you for this reminder.
